Elaichi

Elaichi or cardamom is considered a revered spice in Ayurveda because of its tridoshic properties. It is believed to balance all three doshas, vata, pitta, and kapha. I use this “queen of spices” along with cinnamon in my morning chai daily, as it enhances the taste and soothes the throat.

In Indian medicinal history, many elaichi benefits have been noted, including supporting digestion, improving respiratory issues, and enhancing skin health. If you are looking for a marvellous ayurvedic herb that is full of antioxidants and nutrients, then Elaichi can’t be overlooked!

How Does Elaichi Benefit in Our Daily Lives?

Elaichi pods are tiny but mighty and provide many benefits to the body medically, including detoxification of the body, supporting hair and skin health, and improving dental issues. Let’s see the elaichi benefits in detail:

  1. Improves Digestion

There are many elaichi benefits for gut health concerns like bloating, indigestion, and stomach cramps. The spice stimulates the agni (digestive fire), which results in easier breakdown of food and better digestion.

Wherever I feel bloated after meals, I chew 1-2 sukshma ela pods, which provide quick relief most of the time. You can also consume it in the form of cardamom-infused tea after meals.

Studies have also shown that it can help improve food poisoning by fighting bacteria named Salmonella and Campylobacter and reduce stomach inflammation.

    Did you know?

There is a variety of banana that is known as the elaichi banana (Yelakki or Chiniya), which has thin skin and a creamy texture. Low in calories and rich in fibre, Elaichi banana benefits in reducing constipation and regulating blood pressure.
  1. Detoxifies the Body

Cardamom seeds are a natural detoxifier because of their antioxidant and diuretic properties. Its consumption helps in flushing out the buildup of toxins (ama) out of the body. Elaichi benefits the kidneys by cleansing the urinary tract and liver function through eliminating metabolic waste.

  1. Supports the Respiratory System

Sukshma Ela is believed to help treat respiratory conditions such as colds, coughs, and congestion related to bronchitis and asthma. It is a natural expectorant and has anti-inflammatory qualities with which it balances the kapha dosha in the body. This results in clearing the mucus and decreasing the inflammation in the airways.

It is considered one of the best Ayurvedic remedies for a dry cough. Whenever I struggle with a cold or cough, I inhale the steam of cardamom-infused water or have a cardamom tea, which soothes the throat and makes breathing easier.

  1. Enhances Skin

Cardamom uses can involve addressing many skin issues like acne, pruritus, excessive dryness, and improving the overall texture. It’s oral consumption detoxifies the body by flushing out the harmful toxins.

It can be applied to the skin too, in the form of a mask or pack. The antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties improve the blood circulation and enhance the glow of the skin.

    Cardamom Honey Face Mask

Take a tablespoon of elaichi powder and mix with a teaspoon of honey. When it attains a smooth paste-like consistency, apply it to the face. Leave for 15 to 20 minutes and wash it off. Here, elaichi benefits in treating issues like dark spots and blemishes.
  1. Improves Hair

Elaichi has an ability to strengthen the hair roots, fight infections, and improve the overall hair and scalp health. It’s tridoshic, and antioxidant properties help nourish the hair and combat dandruff.

If you want to use it externally, then go for a cardamom water rinse or apply cardamom oil to the hair.

  1. Good for Dental Care

Cardamom is highly effective in improving dental ailments like bad breath, tooth decay, and gum inflammation. The compounds, including cineole, cardanole, and terpinene, fight the bacteria. Through this, elaichi water benefits in stronger teeth and more resilience to cavities.

Consider using the sukshma ela pods as a mouth freshener or boil them in water to make a mouthwash.

  1. Helps to Lower Blood Sugar

Elaichi benefits in decreasing the blood sugar levels by improving digestion and flushing out the metabolic waste from the body. With its agni (digestive fire) quality, it ensures that the food is broken down properly, which reduces the pressure on the pancreas. It also pacifies the vata and pitta dosha, which helps in overall balance in the body.

Cardamom Benefits for Male

Traditionally, it is believed that elaichi benefits for male. It is rich in potassium and antioxidants, which help improve erectile dysfunction, increase libido, and reduce fatigue. It exemplifies how Ayurveda restores energy and immunity naturally. Its consistent consumption can increase overall physical strength in men.

Cardamom Benefits for Females

Elaichi can do wonders for female health issues. Its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant qualities can help in improving metabolism, hormonal imbalance, period cramps and discomfort. Through all this, elaichi water benefits as an ayurvedic herbal for weight management in women.
